Communication Sciences and Disorders Degree

Program Overview

Careers in communication sciences and disorders use a variety of techniques to diagnose and treat people with speech, language and hearing disorders. Employment is available in a variety of settings such as hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, government agencies, early childhood centers and in the sales industry. Because of a national shortage in the field, individuals with graduate-level degrees in communication sciences and disorders are in high demand among employers.

Highlights of the Communication Sciences and Disorders Major

  • Employment in the field of communication sciences and disorders requires a graduate-level degree. One-hundred percent of graduates from  UW-River Falls master's degree program are employed.

  • Expect interactive classrooms and the ability to work closely with faculty.

  • Students experience many opportunities for undergraduate research. Facilities include aphasia, augmentative communication, voice, speech science and audiology laboratories.

Skills and Learning Outcomes

As a student in this program, you will learn to:

  • Describe the biological and neurological bases of normal human communication.
  • Apply basic speech and hearing-science information and ideas.
  • Describe the causes, characteristics, prevention, assessment and intervention strategies for articulation/phonological language, hearing, voice and fluency disorders.
