Four UW-River Falls Students Selected to Present at Global Science Gathering

Nov. 5, 2012--Four students from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls have been selected to present their research at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston, Feb. 14-18, 2013. All four of the students will present research conducted through the UW-River Falls Tissue and Cellular Innovation Center (TCIC).

“This is one of the premier international science meetings in the world and represents a significant step forward in the participation of the TCIC at that level,” said Tim Lyden, professor of biology and director of the Tissue and Cellular Innovation Center.

Founded in 2001, the mission of the TCIC is to develop a nationally recognized and self-supporting "center of excellence" for research and training in tissue engineering and stem cell biology at UWRF through collaborative interactions with academic, industry and clinical partners.

The student researchers from UWRF presenting at the AAAS annual meeting and their research projects are:

  • Rijada Suljic of New Hope, Minn., will present “Characterization of Specialized C2C12 Myoblast Cell Morphologies Relevant to Artificial Muscle Tissue Development in 2D and 3D Cultures.”
  • Brittany Servant of Rhinelander will present “In-vitro 3D ‘Artificial Tumor Tissues’ Developed from the Hela, Cervical Carcinoma Cell Line Display Evidence of Regional Differentiation and Cellular Specialization as Well as Motile, Stem-like Cell Populations.”
  • Charlotte Stanford of New Auburn and Kevin Rixmann of Osceola will present “Exploring the Dynamic Role of Adipose Tissues in Breast Cancer Using 3D Artificial Tissue Models of 3T3-L1 or Swiss and MCF-7 Cells.”
  • Rixmann will also present “Modeling the Effects of Insulin on Breast Cancer Artificial Tissue Models.”

“Last year we presented one poster at this meeting and the most common comment to Kevin Rixmann was ‘amazing work, can't believe undergrads do this level of research,’" said Lyden. “Needless to say, I was very pleased.”
