UW-River Falls Dean Emeritus Prochnow Pens Guide to College and Career Success

May 8, 2014—Neal Prochnow, UW-River Falls Arts & Sciences dean emeritus, has written a recently published book titled "Graduate and Start a Career…On Time – Tips for College Students and Parents." In the book, now available in eBook and paperback through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and www.bbotw.com, Prochnow provides advice that students can use to develop an exit strategy to graduate in a timely manner and acquire skills they need to start a career.

"A college degree can still provide young adults with a bright future," said Prochnow. "But there are warning signs posted about college costs, time to degree, student debts, and doubts about college graduates' readiness for the workplace."

The book is broken into three parts: "Overview and Planning," "Build an Efficient Schedule," and "Prepare for a Job and a Career." Each chapter starts with a quiz so students can self-assess how prepared they are or how knowledgeable they are about essential college and career concepts.

"College students' and parents' primary focus has been on the admission process," said Prochnow. "The premise of the book is that college bound students can no longer ensure their future by focusing solely on admission."

The book is edited by Suzanne Hagen, UW-River Falls faculty emeritus.

Prochnow has 37 years of experience in higher education including a ten-year tenure as dean of the UW-River Falls College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a bachelor's degree from UW-River Falls in physics and math, a master's degree in physics from Vanderbilt University, and a doctorate in nuclear physics from Duke University.

Prochnow had previously authored "Get Out of College and Get on with Your Career – Insider Tips from the Dean," published in 2006.
