Campus newspaper wins four awards

May 4, 2020 - The Student Voice, the campus newspaper of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, won four awards in the 2019 Collegiate Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association (WNA) Foundation. Results were announced May 4 by the WNA, the state's trade association for the newspaper industry.

Kacey Joslin, a former UWRF student, won first place in column writing for her April 18, 2019, article, "Epidemic of the nonreader tied to content of books."

Current Assistant Editor Brooke Shepherd, a journalism, dairy science and Spanish major, earned honorable mention for "UWRF alumnus goes on to embalm in Japan," a Sept. 19, 2019, feature story about 1999 graduate Kevin Pavek.

The newspaper staff won second place for editorial writing for "Student Voice offers suggestions for improving Riverside Commons," an April 18, 2019, examination of student dining in the University Center.

"The Student Voice," a contest judge remarked, "included several perspectives, while still offering their opinion about a situation that affects much of the student body."

The Student Voice also earned second place in general excellence in its circulation category.

"Great local photos with a nice emphasis on local news and students," a contest judge wrote.

Contest results originally were to be announced in March during the annual WNA convention but were delayed when spread of the coronavirus forced cancellation of the event. Judges evaluated 318 entries from 14 campus newspapers across 20 categories.

The Student Voice is a student-run campus media organization supported primarily by student fees and advised by faculty in the Communication and Media Studies Department. Founded in 1916, it produces a monthly print edition and maintains a website at uwrfvoice.com.
