UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN River Falls

Benjamin Vinson

This week, in celebration of Veterans Week, we will offer our thanks and shine a light on a few of our very own Falcons who have bravely served and dedicated their time to our country.

Meet Benjamin Vinson

Hometown: Hammond
Term of service: 2009-present
Branch of the armed forces: U.S. Air Force Reserve

A junior in the data science program and active in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, Benjamin Vinson chose UW-River Falls to stay close to home and take advantage of a degree program he was interested in.

"My overall experience with UW-River Falls has been pleasant," said Vinson. "The teachers have been very accommodating to my reserve requirements in regards to my having to occasionally miss a class."

Vinson has taken advantage of the UWRF Military and Veteran Services Office and has been pleased with the services they offer.

"It is very beneficial," said Vinson. "I was able to obtain my GI bill benefits promptly."

Vinson has taken the time to be part of the Veterans Club and feels he has gained a much better understanding of how clubs work here on campus. With his busy schedule, he knows being involved in a club is a good excuse to take a break from studying and get out of the house.

When asked how it feels to be part of the veteran community here on campus, Vinson replied, "I'd like to think it feels the same as being a non-veteran student on campus. The only oddity being the slight age difference to most of the other students in my classes."

Vinson's plans after graduation include finding a job in the greater metropolitan area and remaining close to home, friends and family.

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls invites students, alumni, faculty, staff and the community to attend events throughout the week to honor and support veterans and active duty members of the military.
