Political Science Professor Laurence Cooper to speak at UW-River Falls April 8
March 31, 2026 - Laurence Cooper, a professor of political science at Carleton College, will be the featured speaker for the Dr. Imtiaz Moosa Philosophy and Ethics Symposium Series at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Wednesday, April 8, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Cooper will deliver a talk titled “Two Cheers for Democracy” in the Kinnickinnic River Theatre in the University Center, 501 Wild Rose Ave. The event is free and open to the public.
Cooper’s work has centered on the question of human flourishing - what it is, how we can know what it is (if indeed we can know), what it requires from education and politics and the risks that arise from misunderstanding it. He particularly enjoys teaching and writing about the philosophers whom he regards as great psychologists.
A reception will begin at 3:30 p.m. outside the theater.
The speaker series was established in 2021 in tribute to former UWRF Philosophy Professor Imtiaz Moosa who taught at the university from 1989 until his unexpected death in December 2020. The series features leading experts and thought leaders with expertise in a variety of important philosophical, social justice and contemporary ethics-related issues. It is intended to discuss society’s most pressing issues, and the fragile nature of democracy itself.
