UW-River Falls wins statewide sustainability challenge from Focus on Energy

Dec. 16, 2025 – The University of Wisconsin-River Falls has once again demonstrated its commitment to sustainability by winning the Higher Education Kit Challenge for the second time. UW-River Falls students and staff ordered 116 kits, reducing their energy use by 3,930 kWh. This equates to powering one home’s electricity use for an entire year.

Focus on Energy officials presented UW-River Falls with the award during a ceremony on Dec. 10.

“This competition shows students and staff how small changes can add up to real savings,” said David Voss, energy advisor with FOCUS ON ENERGY®. “Ordering a kit is often the first step toward building habits that will lower their energy bills and support a more sustainable future.”

The Higher Education Kit Challenge is an annual competition created by FOCUS ON ENERGY®, Wisconsin’s statewide energy efficiency program. This challenge encourages colleges and universities to engage students and faculty living off-campus in energy-saving behaviors. Participating schools choose from a variety of free kits containing items such as LEDs, a showerhead, a power strip and more. Each kit ordered earns points and the school with the most orders based on its size receives a $5,000 cash prize. Kit orders were accepted from July through the end of October.

UW-River Falls earned the top spot by promoting the challenge at over 15 campus events since the beginning of the semester. Students in the Sustainability Office played a key role in distributing handouts and posters. They spearheaded outreach across off-campus housing and through peer networks. The university utilized newsletters, campus-wide emails and social media to help drive engagement. Additionally, a student-produced unboxing video was shared on Instagram to raise awareness.

“This recognition shows the impact that comes from giving our community simple ways to take action, which supports the sustainability priorities in our strategic plan,” said Mark Klapatch-Mathias, sustainability coordinator with the UWRF Sustainability Office. “Providing access to energy efficiency products reinforces sustainability as a core value and encourages students and employees to take steps that support a more sustainable future. Thank you to Focus on Energy for making this possible to our campus community!”

“It was great to see how many students and employees stepped up to promote the program and participate,” said Cass Hoffman, a senior environmental science major from Apple Valley Minn., who created UWRF marketing materials for the challenge as a student employee in the Sustainability Office. “Every bit of support mattered and helped build momentum around sustainability on campus.”
