The newly created UBCC aims to foster discovery, innovation and talent development by bringing together university and business resources in STEM fields and beyond. Under Huppert's leadership, the UBCC will aim to expand UWRF’s industry partnerships, creating more hands-on student learning opportunities—such as internships and joint research projects—and sparking innovative collaborations with faculty and staff. The UBCC will be located in the university’s new $117 million Science and Technology Innovation Center, a cutting-edge facility equipped with labs and workshops that will support both education and industry engagement.

“The appointment of Blane as the inaugural director of the new University Business Collaboration Center is the perfect way to begin bringing our vision to life,” said UWRF Interim Chancellor John Chenoweth. “Blane’s strong ties to the community and expertise in business development make him an ideal leader for the UBCC to ensure we are enhancing the student experience and driving regional economic growth throughout the St. Croix Valley."

Huppert, who grew up on a dairy farm south of River Falls, began his career in broadcast journalism before establishing a 25-year strategic marketing and communications career at 3M. Huppert also served as the sponsor and partnership associate for WiSys, which facilitates the patenting and licensing of innovations for the Universities of Wisconsin.

“I’m humbled and excited for the opportunity to lead the UBCC,” Huppert said. “We now have a dynamic new platform for students and faculty to collaborate meaningfully with the business community. We’re poised to do great things together.”

Huppert earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and history from UWRF, where he received the prestigious Chancellor’s Award for Students, and a Master of Business Administration from Rollins College. He has remained closely connected to UWRF, serving as both a member and chair of the Alumni Advisory Board.

“Blane brings a wealth of experience in marketing and relationship building to his new role,” said Karl Peterson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “We’re delighted to welcome him back to UWRF to lead the UBCC.”

Huppert will begin his new role September 15.
