Build skills and confidence with the Humane Handling Institute (HHI) at UW-River Falls. We train meat industry professionals, maintenance personnel, and stunner operators to handle animals with care, how to perform stunning equipment maintenance, and how to ensure quick, effective stunning.

Humane Restraint and Stunning

Effective restraint, stun placement, and equipment maintenance are necessary to render an animal immediately unconscious. In this workshop you will complete activities related to these key aspects of a successful stun.

  • Repair and maintain stunning equipment
  • Hands-on skills practice (no experience necessary)
  • Problem-solve challenging scenarios

Workshops run Thursday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days.

Build a Humane Handling Plan

In this workshop you will create a collection of establishment-specific protocols and documentation. A robust systematic approach to animal welfare utilizes a HACCP-like approach of monitoring, tracking, and responding to humane handling risks.

Fee: 

FREE for a limited time for most plants!

  • Use of life-like models for stunning exercises creates a no-pressure environment for hands-on practice
  • Participants are invited to bring their own stunning equipment.  Please do not bring firearms to campus.

The fee to attend a workshop is $1,000 per trainee. Most plants qualify for full tuition support from the Wis. Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, with no workshop fees paid out of pocket.  Sign up to confirm if you qualify.  We manage the reimbursement process, and you simply need to attend the workshop and cover your own travel expenses.

UW-River Falls is located in northwestern Wisconsin along the Kinnickinnic River Valley region of Wisconsin's western border with Minnesota. It is conveniently located along State Highways 35, 65 and 29, and is only five minutes from I-94.  River Falls is 30 minutes east of Minneapolis/St. Paul  and is considered part of the metro area.

UWRF campus is 40 miles from the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.  The closest hotel to campus is the Radisson Hotel River FallsAccommodations are not included in the registration and should be made separately.

The City of River Falls is a thriving and growing community located east of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in northwestern Wisconsin. With a population of 16,183 residents and 5,862 college students, the City offers 26 parks, miles of hiking and biking trails along the Kinnikinnic River and a vibrant downtown. There are restaurants, shops, grocery stores and gas stations located a safe and walkable distance from campus.

If you need to cancel, you can send a qualified substitute. Up to 10 calendar days prior to the start date, you have the option to transfer to a different date, or cancel without penalty.  Cancellations received fewer than 10 days before the start of their workshop will be invoiced $50 to cover meals and administrative expenses.
