Kinni Outdoor Adventures Combats Area Cabin Fever

Feb. 11, 2011--Instead of being down with the blues while Wisconsin goes through its winter weather patterns, those in the River Falls area can take a look on the bright side at Kinni Outdoor Adventures at UW-River Falls.

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls’ former KinniConnections program has been revamped into the dynamic new Kinni Outdoor Adventures and offers many solutions to cabin fever. Kinni Outdoor Adventures manages the Kinni Rental Center, UWRF’s rock climbing wall and an adventure program that plans trips and excursions.

The rental center is stocked with outdoor gear from backpacks and camping gear to yard games. Much of the equipment was purchased within the last year, and all of it is in great shape. Winter sports equipment includes snowshoes, cross-country skis, sleds and ice fishing gear such as gas augers, portable icehouses and poles.

Daily, weekly and weekend rental rates are available for UWRF students, faculty, staff and community members. UWRF students can rent snowshoes for as little as $4.

“Outdoor gear can be expensive and is difficult to obtain. Kinni Outdoor Adventures offers hundreds of quality and affordable rental items and resources,” says Student Manager Shaun Vass.

Vass notes that people enjoy using their gear at local destinations like Willow River, Kinnickinnic and Afton State Parks, Glen Park, Hoffman Park and even backyards.

The program offers trips and excursions such as cross-country skiing at Willow River State Park and kayaking the Kinnickinnic River. The trips are so popular that the numerous programs for spring semester are already fully booked.

“We strive to teach our participants and renters both basic and advanced outdoor skills through our experienced staff. We are affordable, accessible and we help connect the community through the outdoor experience,” says Vass.

Kinni Outdoor Adventures is located in the Robert P. Knowles Physical Education Center on the UWRF campus and is open Monday, Thursday and Friday from 5-9 p.m. during the spring semester. A full rental products and price list can be found at https://www.uwrf.edu/KinniConnections.
