Academic Staff Performance Management

Chapter 6.6. of the Faculty & Staff Handbook provides details regarding the performance management for Academic Staff.

Purpose:

The performance review is administered once per academic year. Performance review with SMART Goals is a learning process whereby each employee's job performance is deliberately evaluated and guided to result in more effective execution of the organizational goals through the enhancement of employee performance. The performance review is intended to be a cooperative effort between supervisor and employee where SMART Goals are mutually discussed so the employee can effectively perform their responsibilities.

Process:

  1. Creation of work-related goals

For new employees, this should be completed within the first 30 days of employment.  For active employees, goals should be created each year after the annual performance review.

  1. Mid-year goal reassessment

This is an informal discussion between the supervisor and the employee regarding the relevancy of the SMART Goals. The mid-year review should be documented and shared between employee and supervisor noting any changes of concerns with the original goals. For more information regarding SMART Goals, see Academic Staff SMART Goals.

  1. Annual Evaluation
  • By the first Monday of May the employee should provide his/her supervisor with the Academic Staff Performance Review Form. On this form, the employee will summarize key job responsibilities, provide a self-narrative and a self-evaluation of the past academic year's SMART Goals.
  • By the third Monday of May, the supervisor should complete the supervisor portion of the Academic Staff Performance Review Form that was provided by the employee. This will include a supervisor narrative and evaluation of the past academic year's SMART Goals. The supervisor may also propose some development needs/goals which would allow the growth, advancement and/or development of an individual's skills and abilities.
  • Prior to June 15th, a collaborative meeting needs to occur to discuss each person's narrative of performance results and evaluation of the previous year's goals. During this meeting the employee and supervisor will finalize the next year's SMART Goals.
  • On or before the 2nd Friday of June, the Academic Staff Evaluation Cover Sheet and Academic Staff Performance Review Form should be completed, signed, copied and sent to Human Resources.
