WiSys announces 2023-2024 Grant Writing Academy
WiSys Research Development is excited to again offer a Grant Writing Academy. Faculty and staff from the Northwestern UW campuses are encouraged to apply to participate in this inter-institutional Grant Writing Academy during the 2023-24 academic year.
Participants, known as Grant Academy Fellows, will meet in virtual group sessions four times in the fall 2023 semester with one follow-up session in the spring 2024 semester. Grant Academy Fellows will not only benefit from working and learning with their colleagues during group topic sessions but will also be provided personalized support until their proposal submission is complete.
Eligibility:
The grant writing academy is open to all faculty and staff from participating universities, in any discipline or department, especially those who have an identified research/program project idea and are ready to develop and submit an external grant application to support it. Awareness of one or more potential external sponsors with a submission deadline during 2024 is a plus but is not required. Each campus will select up to three participants.
Topics covered may include, but are not limited to:
• Campus resources to help identify sources of funding
• How to read and follow a request for proposal
• Preparing a concept paper and contacting a program officer
• Overview of your campus proposal review process
• Key elements of a successful grant proposal
• Crafting a realistic budget
• Working with your campus Grants and Research/Research and Sponsored Programs Office
• Grant management
Dates:
Fridays 12-2 pm.
- September 22
- October 20
- November 17
- December 15
- Spring 2024 follow-up date TBD
Participant Expectations:
- Fellows will participate in all academy sessions, complete all assignments, and meet expected milestones.
- Fellows will actively engage with other Fellows and provide oral and written feedback to peers.
- Fellows are required to schedule a meeting with WiSys Research Development if they miss a session.
- Fellows will be expected to submit an external grant application within 12 months following completion of the academy (timing is dependent upon the sponsor’s deadline).
- Fellows whose sponsors have deadlines after the academy ends will continue to work with and receive preparation assistance from their campus Grants and Research/Research and Sponsored Programs Office and WiSys Research Development until the proposal has been submitted.
Fellows who achieve program expectations will receive:
- The Grant Application Writer’s Handbook – NSF, NIH, USDA or general version
- $1000 in funds toward your project after a grant proposal has been submitted within 12 months of the completion of the fall portion of the Grant Writing Academy or December 31, 2024.
Application Process:
To apply, submit a current CV, and a 1-2 page summary of your project ideas, potential funding sources and goals you want to achieve through the fellowship program. Please forward this information to the UWRF Grants and Research Office by September 8, 2023.
The goal of the Grants and Research Office is to encourage, facilitate, and support UWRF faculty and staff in securing funding for their research endeavors.
