Co-Curricular Assessment

UW-River Falls is committed to providing excellent educational experiences in all of its programs, including co-curricular activities.  Co-curricular activities encompass both Student Affairs and many other academic and non-academic units on campus.

Higher Learning Commission Defines Co-Curricular Activities

Learning activities, programs, and experiences that reinforce the institution’s mission and values and complement the formal curriculum. Examples: Study abroad, student-faculty research experiences, service learning, professional clubs or organization, athletics, honor societies, career services, etc. (Source: HLC)

These assessments processes are also intended to serve as evidence that UW-River Falls is in alignment with the HLC Criteria:

  • 3.E.1. "Co-curricular programs are suited to the institution's mission and contribute to the educational experience of its students."
  • 4.B.2. "The institution assesses achievement of the learning outcomes that it claims for its curricular and co-curricular programs."

Co-Curricular Assessment Process

Each unit is expected to submit a co-curricular assessment plan that includes identified learning outcomes and methods to collect and assess data related to these outcomes.  Subsequently, each unit provides periodic updated assessment plans and assessment reports that are reviewed by the Co-Curricular Assessment Committee on a regular cycle.  The co-curricular assessment plans and reports are written following committee-defined rubrics.  Information about each part of the assessment processes can be located below.

  • Rotation Schedule:  Each unit submits its co-curricular assessment plan and report every three years.
  • Reporting Time Frame:  Reports cover the three previous fiscal years (e.g., for an assessment report due in 2022, the assessment report includes the previous three fiscal years (i.e., FY20, FY21, and FY22).  In the initial years of participation, the reporting timeframe will reflect the period from the time the co-curricular assessment plan was written until June 30 of the reporting year.
  • Steps in the Process
    • Units compile their assessment plans following a co-curricular assessment plan rubric, and a co-curricular assessment plan template.  Units also compile their assessment reports using a co-curricular assessment report rubric.  In the first year, units submit only the co-curricular assessment plan.
    • Division heads receive the assessment plans and reports by the second Monday in September of the reporting year and review them by the fourth Monday in September.  If revisions are needed, the documents are returned to the unit, which must respond to the division head by the third Monday in October.  The division head forwards assessment plans and reports to the Co-Curricular Assessment Committee no later than the fourth Monday in October.
    • The Co-Curricular Assessment Committee reviews the assessment plans and reports and provides feedback to the unit by the end of February.

Note:  Campus jobs for students can be considered co-curricular but including them in plans and reports is optional.
