  • The service sector accounted for between 16% and 17% of total employment in Wisconsin over the 2009 to 2020 period, with the proportion following below 16% for the first time in 2021.
  • Burnett and Pierce counties have consistently had a higher proportion of its workforce employed in the service sector.
  • St. Croix County has consistently had a substantially lower proportion of its workforce employed in the service sector, with Polk County also following this trend since 2020.

  • The service sector accounted for between 16% and 17% of total employment in Minnesota over the 2009 to 2019 period, with the proportion falling below 16% for the first time in 2020.
  • Washington County has been substantially less dependent on service sector jobs than Minnesota as a whole.
  • Although the proportion of Chisago County workers employed in the service sector has decreased in 2021-22 (after an uptick in 2020), that proportion is still above the state average.

Washington, Polk and St. Croix counties had less than 15% of their workforce in the public sector as of 2022.
