Larry Brentzel

BrentzelLarrywebLarry Brentzel was born in Irwin, PA, near Pittsburgh, in 1942.  He attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and received his B.S. in 1964.  In 1966 he received his M.M. from the University of Michigan.  In 1988 he received a Band Instrument Repair Certificate from the Red Wing Technical Institute.  Larry taught at Derry High School in Derry, PA in 1964-65, then at the State University of New York - New Paltz from 1966-68 and the State University of New York - Buffalo from 1968-1970.  In 1970 he was hired at UW-RF.

Mr. Brentzel was a brass performer and band director.  He was a member of the North American Brass Band Association and the College Band Directors National Association, as well as the music educators' associations M.E.N.C. and W.S.M.A.  He was the conductor for the UW-RF Symphonic Band as well as the Sheldon Theater Brass Band in Red Wing, MN.

In addition, he was director of the annual Instrumental Clinics.  In 1987 he received a UW-RF Faculty Grant.  Larry was on the Music Department Newsletter Committee and usually taught several sections of Music 100.  He gave lessons on brass instruments and brass techniques as well as on band leading for high school teachers.

Larry was for several years director of the UW-RF Marching Band, which performed at football and basketball games.  He took the UW-RF Concert Band on several tours of Europe.

Larry played the cornet for a number of years in the Sheldon Theater Brass Band, the resident performing ensemble at the turn-of-the-century theater in Red Wing, MN.  He was also a band instrument repair technician, specializing in woodwinds.

In 2001, Larry retired from the university.  He and his wife, Ellen Marie, continue to live in River Falls, in a new development on the northeast side of town.
