Chemical Spill

A hazardous chemical spill is a spill in which there is a significant amount of hazardous material that has been released or one in which the release of the substance cannot be controlled.

 

When a large chemical spill has occurred:

  1. Immediately notify University Police at 715-425-3133.
  2. If possible, contain the spill with available equipment (e.g., pads, booms, absorbent powder, etc.).
  3. Secure the area and alert other personnel.
  4. Do not attempt to clean the spill unless trained to do so.
  5. Attend to injured personnel and call 911, if required (see medical emergency procedures).
  6. Evacuate building as necessary.
  7. Contact Risk Management 715-425-3344. Risk Management will contact the Department of Natural Resources spill hotline at 800-943-0003.

 

When a small chemical spill has occurred:

 

  1. Immediately notify University Police at 715-425-3133.
  2. Contact Risk Management for assistance 715-425-3344.
  3. If toxic vapors are present, University Police will secure the area (with caution tapes or cones) to prevent other personnel from entering.
  4. Deal with the spill in accordance with the instructions described in the Safety Data Sheet maintained by the department or found at https://www.uwrf.edu/RiskManagement/MaterialSafetyDataSheet.cfm.
  5. Small spills must be handled in a safe manner while wearing the proper personal protective equipment. Review all posted general spill cleanup procedures.
