Praxis Exam Information

The Praxis exam Professional School Counselor (Test Code 0421 or 5421) is a requirement to be licensed in several states, and the Counseling Program strongly encourages students to take the exam. Currently, neither Wisconsin nor Minnesota require the exam. You may take a paper and pencil version (test code 0421) or a computerized version (test code 5421).

Use code 1918-UNIV WI-RIVER FALLS-EDUCATION when selecting which institution to have scores sent to.

WHEN SHOULD I TAKE THE EXAM? We recommend you wait to take the exam until you have completed all of the core courses AND have some practicum experience. The exam includes sections that are based on the academic learning AND practical counseling skills that are definitely enhanced in your practicum experience. While exam dates are available several times per year, and you may schedule your exam on any of these dates, the goal of the program is to assist you in acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to take the exam at the appropriate time in your program AND PASS IT (the qualifying score is 156). Taking the Praxis is NOT a requirement for graduation.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREPARE? Check out the ETS website for information. See: Get a practice exam and use it. Do not be surprised…be prepared. The exam is a national exam administered at sites in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

NOTE: this exam does NOT take the place of the comprehensive exam.
