Publications Standards and Policy Statement

According to policy set by the Faculty Senate External Relations Committee, every publication directed toward an off-campus audience must have our name—University of Wisconsin-River Falls—printed on the publication. The wordmark would serve this purpose well. The university logo may be used as well in an appropriate location.

Use of symbols or logos which individual units, departments or programs have used in the past to identify themselves is discouraged. Do not combine other logos/symbols with the official university logo. The development of new logos/symbols to identify your specific unit or area is discouraged. Please use the official university logo or word mark along with your unit’s name.


Affirmative Action Statement

In addition, an affirmative action statement is to be used, either as:

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is committed to creating an educational community which enhances student awareness and appreciation of diverse ethnicities and cultures and which actively supports tolerance, civility and respect for the rights and sensibilities of each person without regard to economic status, ethnic background, political views, sexual orientation, or other personal characteristics or beliefs. UWRF Standard Statement

A short standard statement about UW-River Falls should appear in major communications. The following statement (or a condensed version of it) may be used.

"The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is a member of the University of Wisconsin System and is located in scenic western Wisconsin in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. UWRF offers easily accessible year-round arts, cultural and recreational events. Approximately 6,000 UWRF graduate and undergraduate students pursue degrees in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Business and Economics; College of Education and Professional Studies; and the Office of Outreach and Continuing Education. The university provides an excellent environment for learning, emphasizing the importance of faculty-student interaction in classrooms, laboratories, and academic advising and co-curricular activities. A favorable student-faculty ratio affords opportunity for meaningful interchange between faculty and students. Strong interests in teaching, research, international experience and community service are highly valued."


The Clery Act

The following Clery Act statement should appear in major communications such as the website and primary recruitment documents:

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) is a federal law that requires colleges and universities to disclose certain timely and annual information about campus crime and security policies.


Inclusive Content

The website, printed materials, photographs, and visual presentations should take particular care to avoid sexism and discrimination through the use of language or depiction. The participation of women and minorities in university activities should be highlighted whenever possible, particularly in non-traditional roles.

Publication Approval

University Communications and Marketing has oversight responsibility for all publications purchased with university funds and published for an off-campus audience. Individuals may also be required to seek approval from the account administrator, their department head or their dean’s office.

At a minimum, every publication distributed to an off-campus audience must be reviewed by University Communications and Marketing prior to printing. Since many publications are printed from electronic files, departments who wish to prepare their own layout for publications should consult with the University Communications and Marketing to ensure that university standards are met and that software used meets the printer’s requirements.

The following types of publications are subject to review:

  • major publications, including the website, major Admissions recruitment items, university brochures, and any all-college publications

  • departmental or administrative brochures

  • flyers, announcements, posters and course advertisements

  • announcements of employment opportunities (to be reviewed by the office of Human Resources)

  • print and web ads


Policy Exceptions

All possible uses of the university’s graphic identity program and policies governing publications development cannot be anticipated. University Communications and Marketing will review proposed applications not covered in this policy on a case-by-case basis and develop new policies as needed.

In the event of a disagreement among University Communications and Marketing, the policies established in this document and the desires of a department or office representative, the issues will be addressed and resolved in a meeting between the department representative and the appropriate dean or division heads.
