  • Relative to their respective states, a very high proportion of residents of the St. Croix River Valley counties own the homes in which they live.
  • The relatively low rate of owner-occupied housing in Pierce County is probably the result of students attending the University of Wisconsin at River Falls.
  • The percentage of owner-occupied housing tends to be somewhat higher in the Minnesota jurisdictions than those in Wisconsin (with the exception of Burnett County).

  • Homeownership in the Wisconsin counties in the St. Croix River Valley have consistently been above the state average.
  • The proportion of owner-occupied homes fell slightly from 2009/2010 until about 2015 and has been rising or level since that time. After a peak in 2020 (presumably due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions related to it), owner-occupied homes fell to near pre-pandemic levels in subsequent years.
  • Generally, Burnett County has had the highest proportion of owner-occupied housing and Pierce County the lowest.

  • Both Chisago County and Washington County have consistently had substantially higher proportions of owner-occupied homes than the state average.
