100 Years and Counting...

Always for the students...
Always
teaching to the best of our ability...
Always
so our students may achieve their greater purpose.

In the fall of 1912 the Agriculture Department began classes in just three rooms in South Hall with two and one-half instructors. Fifty-three men enrolled for the first school year. In 2012, we marked 100 years since that humble beginning. While much has changed, much remains the same… our dedication to students, our passion for teaching, and our desire to help students fulfill their greater purpose.

The year-long celebration of our Centennial began with our Annual Awards Banquet and the Rededication of the Agriculture Hall of Fame in April 2012. CAFES students, faculty, staff, and alumni alike participated in a myriad of events throughout the year from alumni receptions and reunions to contests and scavenger hunts! Here are some highlights of the past year's Centennial activities...

  • For Homecoming 2012, UWRF students showed off their tractors and rode along in the parade!
  • The Fenceline e-newsletter was distributed to alumni bi-monthly rather than twice/year to celebrate the Centennial year.
  • On Sept. 12, 2012 - CAFES 100th birthday - faculty, staff, and students celebrated with cake
  • Students, faculty and staff chose a winning Centennial ice cream flavor... lemon lovin' poppy seed muffin!
  • Past CAFES students gathered at alumni receptions, including the World Dairy Expo, Midwest Horse Fair, Farm Tech Days, and many other regional alumni events
  • A CAFES Centennial float was showcased in parades for hometown celebrations throughout the summer and across the state, accompanied by alumni from the area
  • The Centennial Scrapbook blog highlighted memories, photos, and individuals over the 100 year history of CAFES
  • The Capture CAFES Photo Contest visually captured what CAFES meant to students.

"Resolved that the following courses of study for a School of Educational Agriculture in connection with the River Falls State Normal School is hereby established to be put into operation as far as feasible September 1, 1912."
