Veterinary Technology

Animal science is an applied science that prepares students for all aspects of farm animal production including feeding, breeding, health and management.

The veterinary technology option is for students who are interested in working with animals in the veterinary healthcare field, but do not necessarily want to become a veterinarian.

Students who complete the program earn a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from UWRF as well as a two-year Associate degree in Applied Science (AAS) from MATC or an accredited technical college. Upon completion of this degree, students are eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) and become a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT).

Why UWRF?

  • Our faculty focus on teaching, with specializations in physiology, nutrition, genetics, reproductive management, animal welfare, animal health, behavior and training.
  • CAFES ensures that you receive hands-on experience at our teaching laboratory farms, which house dairy, beef, sheep and swine herds and an equine operation.
  • With our long-standing ties to industry you could get involved in applied research or have an international experience.
  • Here you will find opportunities for networking and education at the local, regional and national levels of the Pre-Veterinary Medicine Club and Veterinary Medical Association.

This is a five-year program. Students spend three years at UWRF taking coursework for the animal science degree and then go on to take another two years of veterinary technology classes at Madison Area Technical College (MATC) or another college with an accredited veterinary technician program.
