Interns indicate duties performed

  • Participate in all reserve mandatory events, such as Memorial Day parade and National Night Out. Clean squad cars, vacation checks, bike patrol, foot patrol, squad patrol, boat trailer parking enforcement and assist officers when needed. Also, ride-a-longs.(2008)

Students identified positive aspects of this placement

  • It is the town I grew up in so I am very familiar with the locations of streets, companies, and the overall area . It is also a good opportunity to give back to the community in which I grew up in.(2008)
  • Learning the behind the scenes of a police department. (2008)
  • Because officers are always working, you can work day or night or both. Time isn't a problem, where it could be on a 9 to 5 job, if you have class or other things going. (2004)

Students identified difficulties typical in this placement

  • The town has a small radius. Therefore it may be difficult to be exposed to some extreme cases of deviant behavior.(2008)
  • Had to change schedule constantly to work around events. (2008)
  • You would need to work as a reserve before interning here because you need the uniform & gear. Also, you need to know many basic duties before you can operate a squad by yourself or do anything else. Uniform is appx $80 and gear is $300. (2004)
