The Minnesota Department of Revenue is located in St. Paul, MN, on Robert Street, about five blocks south of the State Capital.  The mission of the department is to achieve compliance with Minnesota Tax Laws.

During my time as an intern, I was able to provide services to internal and external customers necessary to determine proper compliance with all provisions of the Minnesota Income Tax Act. This gave me the ability to work with a review tax specialist on a multitude of tasks. My regular duties included reviewing taxpayer accounts, performing analysis of corporate returns to identify those for field audit, and to assist field auditors in the development of audit plans.

Going into the internship I had goals of learning about the auditing practices performed by a revenue tax specialist, obtaining a full time position after graduation, and also being happy within the organization of my choosing. With this internship my goals have been met and exceeded and I could not be happier.

This experience as a whole has confirmed my career choice of management. I feel that in this field, and in others, I can take my skills and use them to lead others to a common goal while using my analytical skills, time management, critical thinking, and communication skills to make sure that both my team and myself are successful. I would definitely recommend this organization to other UWRF students. This has been a great learning experience for myself and I enjoyed the opportunity. I have verbally accepted a full time position with the Department of Revenue so that I can continue working here now that my internship will be ending. I feel that there is still a lot for me to learn here and that taking on a full time position will only help further my knowledge and allow me to have a larger role in the auditing process.

My advice to fellow students is to go into everything with an open mind and never be afraid to ask questions or challenge yourself.
