Internship:  HR IT Developer
Employer: 3M Company, Maplewood, MN
How did you acquire your internship?  Networking with current employees
Future: I received an offer for another internship at 3M for the summer of 2020.

3M generates revenue from over 55,000 products in almost every category imaginable. You are always within 10 feet of a 3M product whether it’s in your phone, tv, or even your car. They have endless opportunities for careers and allow you to move around as much as you desire.

As an HR IT intern my role was to assist my team in the creation of a global payroll system. I created scripts that allowed the software at multiple different companies to communicate in order to automate all of 3M’s benefits, pay, etc. I also assisted other developers when they needed an extra hand. Towards the end of the internship when I was wrapping up my main project I worked on testing for a new system update that rolled in while I was there.

My main goal when going into this internship was to get real world experience with programming. I came out with way more experience than I could’ve ever imagined. The people at 3M are incredibly helpful and taught me a plethora of valuable information. I learned multiple new programming languages, how to network, how to act professional, and how to manage your time correctly. While I was there I felt like an actual employee and everyone treated me like one too.

Being an intern at 3M has confirmed my career choice and also set the bar very high for what I should expect out of a company when I graduate and move into my career.

My advice to students is apply at as many places as you can and do it as soon as the position opens. The sooner you apply the better chance you have of getting the job. Make sure your resume is tailored to the specific position you’re applying to.
