Grant Schmitt-Featured Intern 2020

Grant Schmitt-Featured Intern College of Business and Economics 2019

Major: Business Administration Marketing/Professional Sales
Hometown: Elk River, MN
2nd Internship:  Sales Intern, Summer 2019
Employer: Hyland, Cleveland, OH
Future: I will be graduating December 2019 and with two internships under my belt I am confident that I will have the Healthcare/Software Sales job that my experience has set me up for following graduation.

Hyland is a private software company located just 20 minutes west of Cleveland, Ohio. Hyland Healthcare provides the connected healthcare solutions that put patient content at your fingertips, allowing you to focus on your patients rather than searching for the information you need to make vital clinical decisions.

My role as the Sales Intern at Hyland involved expanding my business development skills through prospecting and qualifying leads while utilizing salesforce to track and develop potential customers through the sales process pipeline. I began my own campaign of emailing and cold calling over 200 industry specific leads looking to gain customer interest that overall formed warm leads that the sales managers were able to pursue.

After having one internship experience under my belt, I wanted to go the extra mile of stepping out of my comfort zone by pursing an out of state opportunity. Moving to Cleveland and starting a completely different life taught me much more than just the sales experience. It taught me a lot about myself and what I want in life. Having an out of state internship for the summer is extremely beneficial because now I know what and where I want to be post-graduation this winter.

Not only does an internship teach you the basics of corporate culture,  making connections and expanding your network, but it helps you develop a mindset of what you want to do in life. I think that is really important because after graduation I know I will be on the fast track to my career goals now that I have gotten to experiment with a few companies and find what it is I am looking for.

My advice to students is to not hesitate for a second when applying for internships. The value you get from interning for a company sets you up to be successful after college in so many ways. If there is one thing I learned this summer over last summer’s internship, it’s how important it is to put yourself outside of your comfort zone and to try new things. I can attest that by doing so you grow and learn so much more about yourself than by settling for a job that you are comfortable with.
