Internships

Eric Byerly-Featured Intern

Eric Byerly-College of Business and Economics Featured Intern

Major: Data Science with an option in Economics
Hometown: Bayport, MN
First Internship:  Technology and Operations Services Intern; Summer 2019
Employer: U.S. Bank; Richfield, MN
Future: I have received a part-time offer to work with my team through the school year. I hope to come back to U.S. Bank next summer as an intern in the area of Operational Risk Management with Data Science if I receive an offer.

U.S. Bank is a financial services bank servicing a range of customers from Commercial Banking customers (e.g. an average American citizen), Corporate Banking customers (e.g. other businesses), Wealth Management clients, and other customers, clients, and vendors. It is the 7th largest bank in the entire United States!

In my role as a Technology and Operations Services Intern, I was responsible for completing weekly trend analysis on employee incident tickets with U.S. Bank’s Oracle Access Management that my team works with primarily. I also worked on a project trying to find missing ID values for employee software entitlements in a 250,000 row dataset!

I furthered my understanding of trend analysis and building my knowledge of Data Analysis. I also grew in my professional communication by being more concise and clear in my ideas when speaking with another U.S. Bank employee, intern, or senior leader. I also worked on developing further some of my stronger soft skills through networking and informational meetings. I can happily say I have made a fair amount of great connections that will benefit me down the road.

I believe my internship at U.S. Bank has definitely helped me in confirming a career in Data Science. I met with various U.S. Bank employees during the course of my internship that did Data Science work and it helped me discover what would interest me in a Data Science career after school as there is so much you can do with it!

My advice to fellow students is to be open to new opportunities because you never know where it may lead! I believe I grew the most this summer as I was so willing to try new things and learn as much as I could. I believe I will be more successful keeping that mindset  as I begin my professional career.
