CAFES Giving Day

It's not too late for you to make a difference!

Every dollar donated during our annual Giving Day campaign goes directly to CAFES student organizations and judging teams for team travel, student activities, conferences, professional development and more. Your support supplements funding for these activities, the College provides some financial support and the students themselves are expected to pay a portion of their expenses for any travel.

The one day total for our November 2, 2023 Giving Day was just under $14,000, a bit shy of our $15,000 target. If you missed us on November 2nd you can still help us meet our target!

Congratulations to Tim S., Tim N. and Katrina L. our Giving Day 2023  prize winners!

7-9am
We’re easing into the morning just as a retiree gets to do!  Retired Dean of CAFES, Dale Gallenberg has challenged us to raise $500 in the first two hours.

9-10am
Since we’re warmed up now, Dean of CAFES Mike Orth has challenged us to raise $500 in one hour and he’ll match it!

10-11am
Donate during the 10am hour and you’ll be entered into a drawing for a UWRF swag package - fun stuff for all ages!  Have you seen our “Barbie pink” pig pens?!

11am-noon
Our retired faculty have given us a $500 challenge for this hour.  Did a faculty member go above and beyond for you?  A donation this hour would be a great way to honor them, let us know if you are honoring someone with your donation!

Noon-1pm
This is a big one!  Dean Emeritus Dale Gallenberg is back with a challenge to match his donation of $2000 over the noon hour. Historically this is a strong time for donations - we can do this!!

1-2pm
Let’s keep things rolling!  Dr. Vic Bekkum (‘64) was generous with his challenge gift this year and has a $1000 match challenge for us this hour.

2-3pm
Donate during this hour and you'll be entered into a drawing for a unique gift from CAFES!  One or two of our advanced Animal Science - companion animal students, under the guidance of Shelly Volsche, PhD, CPDT-KA, will provide a free 1 hour training session for you and a furry family member.  They will provide advice and tips on basic training (sit, stay, come) or teach doggie zen mat training. Note: this is not a consultation for dogs with reactive behaviors or separation anxiety as those issues require longer term assessment and guidance.

3-4pm
We have another $500 match challenge from the CAFES retired faculty!

4-5pm
The CAFES Alumni Board is issuing a $625 challenge this hour. Current board members are: Gary Beastrom (‘66), Derek Husmoen (‘08), Erin Kamm (‘04), David Nonemacher (‘22), Chad Petersen (‘86), Kristin Pronschinske (’04; MS ’05), Marcus Qualle (‘20), Sara Schaefer (’07; MS ’09) and Cary Sifferath (‘98).  How about former Board Members taking them up on this challenge?

5-6pm
At this time of day food comes to mind!   We'll draw from all the donors this hour and send the winner a half dozen packages of meat sticks made in our very own meat plant. Perfect for taking on a fall hike or a hunting trip.

6-8pm
Dr. Vic Bekkum (‘64) wants a really strong finish to the day with his second $1000 challenge match.

And remember all donations of $75 or more today will be entered into the drawing for two seats to the Minnesota Wild vs San Jose Sharks on March 28, 2024!

ONE judging team trip can cost $5000.   CAFES has 16 teams this year, so you can see how the cost adds up quickly!  CAFES provides some financial support to our teams, but no direct support to our student organizations.

Your donation will help! A portion of the funds raised are directed to our judging teams and a portion is set aside to be awarded through the Student Impact Grant (SIG) process.  Any CAFES team or club can apply for a SIG, a subcommittee of the CAFES Alumni Board reviews the applications and determines the awards.

Some words of thanks from members of our student groups that have benefited from your generous donations!

“The Student Impact Grant made the Trip to Louisiana for our team possible. These grants helped cover the expenses around travel. It let our team focus on preparing for the contest and then concentrate on competing - rather than how we would afford to go.” - Matthew Fischer, member of the Poultry Judging Team

"We are really thankful to apply all of the skills we learn in class at competitions like NACTA, all thanks to the support of CAFES Giving Day!" - Megan Culpitt, member of the Soil Judging Team

"Your support allowed us to attend our first livestock judging competition at the Sioux Empire Livestock Show - Thank you!" - Ben Steffes, member of the Livestock Judging Team

"Myself and another Collegiate Farm Bureau member were able to compete in the Young Farmers and Agriculturists Discussion Meet, furthering our skills and knowledge about agriculture, becuase of the resources right here at UWRF." - Michelle Stangler, member of UWRF Collegiate Farm Bureau

"Thanks to CAFES Giving Day we were able to attend the Alpha Tau Alpha National Conclave and National FFA Convention!" - Rose Gillis, member of the UWRF Agriculture Education Society and Alpha Tau Alpha
