UW-River Falls to host Agricultural Technology Contest April 2

March 29, 2022 – The University of Wisconsin-River Falls will host the annual Agricultural Technology Contest on Saturday, April 2. After being unable to host an in-person event for the past two years because of the pandemic, UWRF will welcome back to campus over 1,000 middle and high school students representing over 60 schools from both Minnesota and Wisconsin to partake in 15 different competitions.

The Agricultural Technology Contest encompasses competitions focusing on agricultural technology and mechanics, agronomy, dairy cattle evaluation, farm business management, floriculture, forestry, horse evaluation, livestock evaluation, milk quality and products, nursery and landscape, poultry, veterinary science, and wildlife. Nine of these competitions serve as qualifying contests for the Wisconsin FFA Association Career Development Events held in Madison.

UWRF provides other unique opportunities through the Agricultural Technology Contest. Middle school students have the chance to demonstrate their skills in agriscience with a contest specifically design for their age group. Furthermore, chapters have the opportunity to compete in an invitational crop show.

In addition, this year UWRF will facilitate the Wisconsin FFA state contests for agricultural communications and food science and technology virtually at the end of April. The teams that place first will advance to compete at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October.

Each year it takes more than 100 volunteers to ensure successful contests. Faculty and staff of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences serve as chairs for each of the contests. Ethan Heelein, an agricultural education major from Genoa City, is this year’s contest coordinator. Tim Buttles serves as the faculty chair of the contest.
