CAFES awards scholarships and recognizes outstanding service

May 3, 2018 – A total of $163,000 was awarded to students in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls at their 52^nd Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet April 19 at Kilkarney Hills Golf Club.

Students, family, donors, faculty and staff made up the 300 guests. Kyle Stuttgen, a senior from Stanley majoring in agricultural business, served as the emcee for the evening. A total of 161 scholarships were awarded to continuing students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors in the 2018-19 academic year.

Four new scholarships were among those awarded:

• The Anthony F. and Anne S. Jilek Endowed Scholarship for animal science or dairy science majors active in Block & Bridle or Rodeo Club.
• The Carl Nachreiner Memorial Scholarship for students in any CAFES program.
• The Gerald “Jerry” Nolte Agricultural Business Endowed Scholarship for a student majoring in agricultural business.
• The Dave and Pat Stone Geology Scholarship for geology students.

Dave and Pat Stone were also the recipients of the 2018 CAFES Outstanding Service Award. Holly Dolliver, associate professor of geology and soil science, nominated the Stones for the award. Ian Williams, professor of geology, presented the Stones with the award at the banquet.

Dave was an earth science major at UWRF and Pat was in the conservation program. Dave went on to earn his master’s degree in geology and have a very successful career in the petroleum industry. He is currently the chief operating officer for Ward Petroleum.

The Stones have been financial supporters of UW-River Falls and the geology program for more than 20 years and most recently donated $100,000 to establish the Stone Geology Fund. This fund is supporting scholarships for new and continuing students, as well as equipment and instrumentation for classes, and professional development experiences for students. The Stone’s impact has extended well beyond financial support. They have made time to visit with students and faculty, sharing their perspective and insights from years in the industry. These conversations led the Stones to develop and teach an Applied Petroleum Geology short course that was taught for the second time this spring semester.

In her nomination letter, Dolliver wrote, “…what I appreciate most about Dave and Pat is their genuine interest in our students and faculty.” She went on to sum up their impact.

“They are simply great people and through their kindness, positivity, and generosity are transforming lives,” Dolliver said.
