Renowned Cybèle Young is Spring Visiting Professor in Art

EVENT CANCELLED due to risks associated with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

March 9, 2020 - Toronto-based artist and author Cybèle Young is the Spring 2020 Walker D. and Helen Bryant Wyman Visiting Professor in Art at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She will present a free public lecture to present her work and process on Monday, March 16, at 5 p.m. in 222 North Hall.

Young is a renowned artist and author whose work is exhibited and collected internationally. She works in a diverse range of mediums, but always at the root is a close connection to the hand, to paper and to the drawn line. She has both written and illustrated eight picture books to date.

Engaging with abstract and familiar motifs, she juxtaposes sculptures to create a sense of dialogue or play between them. Her intricate sculptural artworks are inspired by seemingly insignificant day-to-day experiences where objects imply human interactions and small observations become fantastic.

“Engaging with abstract and familiar motifs, I juxtapose sculptures to create a sense of dialogue or play between them,” Young says. “I approach my work in series and components, ultimately building an ongoing inventory of personal experience and observation. I compile these in various arrangements to create communities that interact and form new relationships – much like the small seemingly insignificant moments in our everyday lives that come together to create unexpected outcomes.”

Young will be demonstrating her process of paper sculpture and construction to UW-River Falls students during the week of her visit, March 16-20. In addition to her public lecture on March 16, she will collaborate with the Glass Program to create collaborative work on Tuesday and Thursday, March 17 and 19. The Glass Studio in Kleinpell Fine Arts will be open for all to come and watch. Young’s visit will culminate with a discussion and critique of the resulting glass work that UW-River Falls students helped her create.
