Klapatch named to national recycling board of directors

Mark Klapatch recyclingAugust 29, 2019 – University of Wisconsin-River Falls Sustainability and Custodial Supervisor Mark Klapatch has been named to the College and University Recycling Coalition’s (CURC) Board of Directors. Klapatch has represented UW-River Falls as a CURC member since 2010.

CURC’s mission is to advance recycling and sustainable materials management at colleges and universities across the country. The coalition represents a community of over 900 recycling and sustainability professionals in higher education led by a board of directors made up of recycling, zero waste and sustainability managers in North America. The organization’s roots date back to the 1990’s when it was originally formed as a technical council within the National Recycling Coalition. In 2009, CURC branched out as an independent 501(c)3 organization.

CURC members play a vital role in exchanging knowledge among campus recycling and sustainability leaders and coordinators. Members have access to resources, toolkits, archives and networking assistance. CURC is governed by an all-volunteer board of directors.

Klapatch has been involved with waste and recycling efforts since joining UWRF in 2009. He helped create the university’s surplus program, has applied for and received multiple grants for recycling bins and has piloted numerous waste minimization related projects on campus. As an active CURC member, he has participated in four annual CURC workshops including the 2018 conference where he was a presenter.
