'Getting Started in Farming: Veterans and a New Generation' to be Presented at UW-River Falls

October 31, 2014--University of Wisconsin-River Falls horticulture student and Sergeant Andrew Rondeau will present "Getting Started in Farming: Veterans and a New Generation" on Thursday, Nov.13, at 7 p.m. in the Kinnickinnic Theater in the University Center on campus. The presentation is free and open to the public. Young farmers and veterans are especially encouraged to attend.

The event's timing was chosen to coincide with Veteran's Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

The average age of farmers is 58 and rising. A new generation of self-motivated, business-minded people is necessary to fill future demand. Included in this new generation are veterans who, through farming, are presented with a unique opportunity to be their own boss and continue to serve by feeding the world. Rondeau will examine these growing interests, opportunities and concerns for farming in the next generation.

Rondeau served in the military from 1999-2011 before enrolling at UW-River Falls in the fall 2011. He will graduate in December and intends to apply for the UW-River Falls Master of Science in Agricultural Education program. His professional goals include working for University of Wisconsin-Extension or starting a veteran-to-farmer program to help veterans start a career in agriculture.

"As veterans, I think we have certain qualities that can translate well to agricultural work, like helping others and providing for all," said Rondeau. "We have the drive to do the hard work to get the job done. Farming also provides a flexible work schedule allowing for us to spend time with families at home and work which, as soldiers, we didn't always have."

Rondeau has worked closely with horticulture Professor Brian Smith on fruit and vegetable growing internship and research opportunities. Rondeau managed Smith's replicated strawberry trials to find the best cultivars for the climate zones in the region. He has also worked with St. Croix County Agent Heidi Doering and has attended field days that addressed concerns regarding soil health, pest management practices, new market crops, and added value products.
