Annual Unity in the Community Event Set

April 8, 2011—The 18th annual Unity in the Community festival is set for April 17-20 at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Events planned include a food sculpture competition, an urban immersion service retreat, a sustainable art installation, a screening of the film “Colorblind” by Tim Wise and a lecture by Ruben Rosario, a columnist at the St. Paul Pioneer Press. On April 20, the Bike to Uganda event will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on the University Center (UC) Mall, raising funds and awareness for the Academy of Jomba in Uganda.

An all-campus celebration will take place that day from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on the UC Mall featuring performances by musician and poet Jasiri X, Mongolian dancer Chimgee Haltaruhuu and a drum circle by the Women’s Drum Center. Free henna tattoos and Unity in the Community photo key chains will be available. Donations of non-perishable food and funds for the Kinnickinnic Backpack Program will be accepted during the celebration.

At 2 p.m., Professor of Psychology Cyndi Kernahan will present “Myth Versus Reality - How Do Your Social Identities Influence Your Job and Economic Prospects?” as part of UWRF’s Social Justice Series in the Kinnickinnic River Theater, UC. A talking circle with UWRF international students is set for 4 p.m. in the St. Croix River Room, UC.

Unity in the Community moves downtown for continued celebration of diversity and inclusion in the River Falls community later in the evening. Events will take place in Veterans Park from 5:30-7 p.m., with a rain site being the River Falls Public Library.
