Faculty/Academic Staff Spotlight

Ellen Schultz
Academic Advisor
College of Business and Economics

Why did you choose to come to River Falls?

My husband and I moved to River Falls in August 1979 when he accepted a teaching position with the UWRF Department of Economics.    We soon realized this was a special place, and made River Falls our permanent home.

In the fall of 1995, I was hired as a part-time academic advisor in the Business Administration Department.  Many changes have taken place since that time in terms of the formation and growth in the College of Business and Economics (CBE).   I now am the academic advisor to approximately 400 freshmen and sophomore CBE students.   Previous positions in office management and volunteer coordination helped me realize that I was best suited for a position of service to others.  My undergraduate degree in Business Administration and Economics helps me understand the curriculum the CBE students are completing.   My job as academic advisor is the best of both worlds.

What are three characteristics of a successful student in the classroom?

Helping students learn what it takes to be successful in the classroom is an important part of my job.   Three characteristics of a successful student are: 1) the willingness to put in extra effort outside of class to comprehend, not just memorize, information;  2) believing education is a priority and privilege not to be taken for granted; and 3) being able to balance all aspects of student life.  Successful students also realize they must continue to be lifelong learners to keep pace with technology and remain competitive in their chosen discipline.

What is the most rewarding part of your job and why?

The most rewarding part of my position is observing the personal and academic growth that occurs in most college students.  Since my interactions are mainly with freshmen and sophomores, I encourage them to set goals in all aspects of their lives, not just academic standards.  It is fulfilling to witness a student’s pride in making the Dean’s List or passing a challenging course that they were hesitant to take.   Hearing the names of students that I have worked with announced at graduation is very gratifying.

Where is your favorite place to go in town and why?

My favorite place to visit in River Falls is the UWRF campus.  I love to ride bike or walk on the trails and enjoy the serenity of the Kinnickinnic River.  The flower gardens and landscaping are especially beautiful in the summer months.   Attending an outdoor summer concert in the amphitheatre is an experience that is unique to River Falls.

If you were a student how would you be involved on campus?

If I were a student on the UWRF campus today, I would be involved with the First-Year Experience program.  It’s a great opportunity to help new students and families make the exciting transition to our campus community while enhancing your own organizational and communication skills.

If you could change any part of your job what would it be and why?

I would like to have more time to meet with advisees and students at risk.  Currently, I also coordinate the CBE internship program which places additional time demands on my schedule.   Other than that, I wouldn’t change a thing!
