Faculty/Academic Staff Spotlight

Keith Chavey
Mathematics Professor
College of Arts and Sciences

Why did you choose to come to River Falls?

I liked that the focus of the University was on the students.

What are three characteristics of a successful student in your class?

Students in my class that are successful are engaged in the course, are disciplined in work habits, and write the correct answers on the exams.

What is the most rewarding part of your job and why?

I find it rewarding to see a student who works hard in a course be successful.

Where is your favorite place to go in town and why?

I enjoy going to the movie theater.

What is something you wish someone told you about college before you went?

I wish I had been more aware of the many extracurricular opportunities in college. In addition, I should have been more aware that there would be greater expectations from the courses than had been the case in high school.

Did you always know you wanted to be a professor?  Why or Why not?

No – however, I did want to find a way to stay in school indefinitely because I enjoyed being in an educational community.

What place/park/event do you think everybody should see?  Why?

Everyone should see a Cubs game from the bleachers in Wrigley field at least once.

How did this strengthen the student-faculty relationship or present the student in a new light?

I enjoy going to plays on campus. One of the reasons is that it gives me a chance to see students in a setting outside of the classroom.

What was your first job out of college?

This job at UWRF was my first out of college.

If you were a student how would you be involved on campus?

The only ‘club’ I was in as a college student was a gaming club, and so I suspect that may be how I would be involved.
