The St. Croix River Valley counties, with the exception of Burnett County, have lower proportions of cost-burdened households than their respective states.
More than one-in-five households in all St. Croix River Valley counties are, however, classified as cost-burdened.
Wisconsin and three of its four St. Croix River Valley counties (St. Croix County being the exception) have slightly lower percentages of cost-burdened households than Minnesota and its counties.
In Wisconsin and its St. Croix River Valley counties, the proportion of cost-burdened households fell over time until 2020, when the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic impacted housing affordability and increased the percentage of cost-burdened households. However, such percentages are still lower than the levels seen right after the Great Recession.
Except for Burnett County, the other St. Croix River Valley counties have gone from having a higher percentage of cost-burdened households than the state average at the beginning of this time period, to having lower proportions than the state average in recent years.
The proportion of cost-burdened households in Minnesota and its St. Croix River Valley counties fell consistently from 2009 to 2019.
Ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic starting in 2020 impacted housing affordability and increased the percentage of cost-burdened households. In Minnesota and Washington County, such percentages are now similar to the levels seen right after the Great Recession.
Chisago County moved from having substantially higher proportions of cost-burdened households than the state average in the early portion of this time period to having a lower-than-average percentage at the end.
Washington County has consistently had lower percentages of cost-burdened households than the Minnesota average.
