Undergraduate Catalog

Program

Students in the economics program study unemployment, inflation, economic growth, the distribution of income and wealth, the balance of payments, and exchange rates, as well as topics related to labor, banking, the environment, health care, poverty, and government systems and policies. Learning more about economics helps students understand how businesses, workers, consumers, and governments interact in domestic and international markets. Many economics majors elect to double major in economics and a related business or liberal arts field. An economics major from UW-River Falls has excellent employment opportunities in the 21st century.

Faculty

The economics department has a diverse and outstanding faculty with expertise in the areas of public finance, government regulation of business, the economics of developing countries, labor economics, the economics of discrimination, money and banking, international economics, and business law. The department also takes pride in its faculty’s strengths in statistics and quantitative analysis. Faculty members are excellent teachers and scholars and have a strong tradition of close personal contact with students.

Why Major in Economics?

Today’s world is filled with economic events and problems with economic origins. The study of economics will provide you with the skills necessary for making important contributions as you experience these events and face these problems. You will learn to identify the nature of issues and to critically analyze alternative solutions. In addition, the study of economics at UW-River Falls will provide you with critical thinking skills and analytical tools that can be used throughout your life in business, at home, and in the community. Recent graduates with an economics major use their education at public and private sector jobs in banking, finance, marketing, management and health care.

Strengths of the Program

The College of Business and Economics is accredited by AACSB International, the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business.

We offer courses in most of the traditional areas in economics that are taught by faculty members who hold doctoral degrees in their field. Our curriculum is especially strong in the quantitative, theoretical, policy, and international areas.

Upper level courses are small. A professional adviser in the College of Business and Economics advises freshman and sophomore students, and upper level students are advised by faculty.

The economics department provides scholarships, internships, and opportunities for international travel, including a three-week summer study program in Uganda that is led by one of our current faculty members. There are also opportunities for student-faculty research and mentoring. The Student Economics Society helps facilitate both professional and social interaction between faculty and students.

Studying economics at UW-River Falls will change your life!
