Goals and Objectives
To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the ways in which natural processes, business structures and social needs intersect. More specifically, our goal is to provide knowledge and understanding of:
- Environmental studies
- Triple bottom line accounting
- Natural resource management
- Information systems
- Logistics and supply chain management
Program
The bachelor of science degree in sustainable management is an online degree completion program designed for students who already have some college credits or an associate's degree.
Students who have completed at least 60 semester credits of transferable coursework, from an accredited college or university, with a 2.0 or better grade point average (GPA) are eligible for admission.
The program is a collaborative effort of four University of Wisconsin campuses ~ UW-Parkside, UW-River Falls, UW-Stout, and UW-Superior ~ and UW-Extension. It provides the knowledge and skills that students need to create profitable businesses, vibrant communities, and a healthy environment for Wisconsin, the United States, and the world. At UW-River Falls, the sustainable management major is housed in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.
Faculty
The broad-based curriculum is taught by faculty from each of the partner campuses. Together they bring degrees in all of the following fields: Accounting, Botany, Business, Chemistry, Computer Engineering, Economics, English, Environmental Dynamics, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Geology, Law, Logistics, Psychology, Physics, Range Science, Resource Management, Sociology and Urban Planning.
Career Opportunities
A bachelor of science degree in sustainable management can be the foundation for a variety of positions and careers. Some examples include
- The Facilities Manager who must compare the costs of solar panels, clean coal, and biofuels, weighing both their currency costs and carbon costs
- The Plant Manager who must manage storm water and geothermal systems
- The Human Resources Director who must look at the long-term impact of today's labor decisions on the welfare of the community surrounding the corporation
- The Product Manager who must develop a new product that reduces greenhouse gas emissions or evaluate existing products against today's sustainability standards
The program was crafted in close partnership with several companies that are leading the way in sustainability such as Johnson Controls, Ford Motor Company, Eastman Kodak, Quad Graphics, FedEx, SC Johnson, Kohl's, Veolia Environmental Services and Modine Manufacturing.
Sustainable Management
This is an online degree program designed for the new economy. Through interdisciplinary inquiry, problem solving, and strong foundations in science and business, you will be equipped to meet the needs of an ever-changing world and business environment. You will develop and build knowledge and skills to help organizations meet triple bottom line requirements, balancing profitability with the needs of the environment and the wider communities in which we live.
