International Travel

Music Department Tours
The Music Department regularly offers UWRF students and community members the opportunity to engage directly with global cultures, through performance and study tours led by Music faculty. In recent years, the Music Department has conducted tours by the UWRF Concert Choir, Symphony Band, and Saxophone Ensembles of the following countries:  China, Czech Republic, England, France Iceland Japan Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, and Taiwan.  These tours directly provide UWRF students global education and engagement by offering students the opportunity to perform for audiences and and interact with the public in a wide range of international cultures.

Field Experience

Beyond the classroom, the music department provides learning experiences that will enable students to become productive in their musical or teaching endeavors. Students will experience diverse educational and cultural opportunities within the university and global community, and engage in research, scholarship, and creative activity to further their knowledge of music.

Global. Innovative. Excellent.

Global:  Hosting International Musicians
The Music Department regularly hosts musical artists from a broad range of global cultures beyond our own, in guest artist recitals, educational residencies, performances with our Music Department ensembles, and in collaboration with other departments in the UWRF campus community.  As an indication of this activity, in recent years, the Music Department has hosted artists from the musical cultures of Canada, China, Croatia, Ireland, India, Netherlands, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, and Sweden.

Global:  Music Faculty Engaged in Global Professional Development
Several UWRF Music Department instructors are directly engaged in international music performance and global education in their professional development.  Examples in recent years include UWRF Music faculty presenting musical performances, workshops, masterclasses, and related events in Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, England, France, Iceland, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Scotland, Slovakia, South Korea, Taiwan, Russia, and Ukraine.

Innovative:  Commissioned Composer Program
Since 1967, the Music Department hosts the noteworthy Commissioned Composer Program, held annually at UW-River Falls.  Now in its 49th year, the program is the longest running university commissioned composer program in the United States, and has hosted five Pulitzer Prize-winning composers.  Each year, student members of the Commissioned Composer Program select a composer of international distinction, to specifically compose a new musical work for UWRF student musicians, including a residency in which the selected composer conducts rehearsals, workshops and masterclasses for the UW-River Falls campus and community.  The program culminates in a world premiere performance of the newly commissioned performed by UWRF students, along with a concert featuring other works by the selected composer, providing UW-River Falls a highly distinctive musical event each year.
