Dr. Rader specializes in teaching Cartography and Geographic Information Systems. Before his retirement, he taught courses on GIS, Digital Image Processing, Human Geography, International Studies, Europe, and Africa. He directed the GIS Lab and the geography internship program from 1993 to 2020.

Dr. Rader has been a faculty member in the Wisconsin in Scotland program and the International Traveling Classroom. He has traveled and taught extensively in Europe; further travels have taken him to Kenya, Uganda, Turkey, and Japan.

Dr. Rader's research has focused on cartographic representation, cartographic education, and the use of GIS in environmental modeling. He has been active in mentoring undergraduate research projects. Outside of the university, he canoes, builds canoes, and photographs.
