Youth Horse Judging Clinic

The annual horse judging clinic is live and in-peson for 2023! The clinic is intended for participants of all experiences interested in learning how to evaluate horse balance, conformation, in-hand classes, as well as performance classes.  Interested individuals may include students from 4-H, FFA youth members, horse owners, agricultural education coaches, as well as anyone wanting to prepare or improve their horse judging skills. Participants of all judging abilities and levels are welcome!

The clinic will run from 9am to 3pm on Saturday, March 25th, and includes lunch, snacks, a judging manual, and t-shirts for participants. Information that will be covered includes how to:

  • take great notes when judging various classes;
  • provide a solid set of oral reasons (with the opportunity to hear and give sets of oral reasons);
  • accurately evaluate balance, conformation, muscling, and overall quality of stock breed horses; and
  • correctly judge halter, Western pleasure, trail, ranch riding, hunter hack, and equitation based on the AQHA handbook

The clinic will be taught by Dr. Casie Bass, associate professor of animal science and coach of the UW-River Falls Horse Judging Team. Both video and live horses (for halter and performance classes) will be included in the clinic.

The clinic registration fees:

  • $90 for participants; cost includes lunch, snacks, a judging manual, t-shirt and participation in all activities
