UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN River Falls
Nov. 27, 2012--The Block and Bridle Club from UW-River Falls sponsored a team in the second annual Midwest Showdown in late October and came home victorious.
John Nelson of Galesville placed first in swine; Matt Colle of Luxemburg placed second in beef; Jenny Zeimer of Cedarburg took third in dairy, and Jill Larson of New Richland, Minn., placed fourth in sheep. The winner from each species went on to compete in a round robin contest, showing each species.
Nelson, a senior majoring in agricultural education, took first place overall and was honored as the Best of the Midwest Showman.
The UW-River Falls Block and Bridle Club was instrumental in starting the Midwest Showdown and hosted the first event in 2011. The Showdown gives students a chance to test their showmanship skills and knowledge of the various animal species. Teams from five different institutions competed in the event held at UW-Platteville this year.
