Applying for Grants

Grants Process

This site contains critical information needed to complete your proposal.  It is necessary to obtain the required institutional signatures on the "Approval to Apply for External Funding Form." This form assures that appropriate officials review and give approval of each proposal and it also provides a record of the processing transaction.  After your Department Chair and Dean have signed this form, please forward with a copy of your proposal to the Grants office for review.  The Grant Administrator will assist in securing the remaining signatures.  Please allow extra time for this process as revisions may need to be made before final signatures can be secured.

Fringe benefit rates, expressed as a percentage of salary, are the rates the University of Wisconsin System institutions charge extramural funds for the employers contribution to fringe benefits. Fringe benefits include, but are not limited to; health insurance, social security, unemployment compensation, worker's compensation and terminal leave, medical FICA, retirement, income continuation insurance, life insurance, and any shortfall or overage from the prior year.

The rates are effective for a fiscal year, which is 7/1 – 6/30. Multiple year proposals should include an estimated increase for future fringe benefit costs. There is no fringe calculated on UW-System funding (exception: new hire on Grant project for .50 or more FTE, 41% fringe must be included.)

Indirect cost rates, are also known as Facilities and Administration, or F&A rates.  Indirect costs include, but are not limited to; administrative costs, maintenance of physical facilities, and utilities that are not readily identified with a project. UW-RF grant proposals must request the full F&A rate available from the funding source.  This is mandated by the UW System Board of Regents and negotiated with the Federal Government.  The rates reflected on this website are applied to the total of salaries and fringe benefits.  Please contact the Grants Office, ext. 3195 with any questions.
