UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN River Falls

Tips for Sustainable Living

Students, faculty, and staff at UWRF are committed to modeling the values, principles, and practices of sustainability. Consider these and other ways you can participate in making our campus more sustainable:

Recycle

UWRF utilizes a single stream recycling process where all recyclable materials (paper, cardboard, glass bottles, plastic containers, and aluminum cans) can all be disposed of in the same container. There are dumpsters located near each residence hall where you can dispose of trash and recycling.

Reuse

Check out the UWRF surplus sale before you buy new. Surplus sales are held on the 2nd Friday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Rodli Hall loading dock. Sale items include, but are not limited to, iMacs, CPUs, desks, tables, filing cabinets, chairs, bookcases, building materials, electronics, hardware, office supplies, and much more.

For more information, visit the Surplus Property Program web page.

Use a Blue Bike

The Blue Bike program is a free bike-share program where people can use a bike for free as desired. There are blue bike racks throughout the city located at Hoffman Park, Veterans Park, UWRF under the KFA overhang, the industrial park, and in front of Our Neighbors Place. Each rack will have four to six blue bikes of various sizes and styles along with a permanently affixed fix-it station.

Additional Sustainability Tips:

  • Turn off lights when you leave a room.
  • Use a refillable water bottle.
  • Use hand dryers instead of paper towels.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
  • Use smart power strips and LED light bulbs.
  • Unplug electronics when not in use.
  • Reduce shower times.
  • Buy notebooks, tissues, and paper products which have recycled content.

Visit the UWRF Sustainability website for more information on campus sustainability news, events and initiatives.
