Placement Testing

Do I need to take a placement test?

UW System placement tests are required for all new students who have not completed college-level courses in English or Math. Refer to our Transfer Credit webpage to determine if you need to take the placement test.

If you've taken French, German, or Spanish in high school, it is recommended that you take the foreign language placement test for your language, especially if you are considering continuing in that language. Students can earn up to 14 credits (and corresponding grades of A) for taking the placement test and passing the class you are placed in with a grade of B- or better.

If you are taking the Math placement test, please note that you are allowed to bring a non-graphing calculator to use during the test.

Students attending UW-River Falls who are not able to take their placement tests during the Regional Placement Testing Program can take them in early June, late August, or January (depending on whether you are starting in the Fall or Spring) prior to their registration date.  Test dates for Summer 2018 are May 29th, June 3rd, 6th, 10th, 13th and August 29th for Fall classes.  Placement tests should be taken prior to your registration date.

Signing up for these on-campus tests is not necessary, simply check in fifteen minutes prior to the test(s) that you need to take.  All placement tests will take place in the University Center (see map) and will follow the schedule below:

  • 1:00pm-Math
  • 2:45pm-English
  • 4:30pm-Modern Language

Parking is free to students and families who display the proper permit in Pay 1 lot.  The parking permit for Placement Testing and New Student Registration details are sent to you in your registration confirmation materials.  Please see the map for more information about how to locate the parking lot on the UWRF campus.  Should you have any questions about parking, please contact NSFP at 715-425-4250 or at
