Bridge to McNair Program

The Bridge to McNair Program is a (non-committal) program for first-year and sophomores enrolled at UW-River Falls to learn what it is like to be a McNair Scholar. This includes the opportunity to explore more about research and graduate school. As part of the program, students will receive:

  • Advisement from McNair Program staff
  • Assistance with an academic plan
  • The chance to attend fun social and cultural events with other students in the Bridge to McNair Program and current McNair Scholars
  • The opportunity to participate in workshops on research and the graduate school experience including financial aid and funding opportunities
  • Invitation to the McNair Program, upon completion of all requirements


  • Be interested in pursuing a research-based graduate degree (e.g. Ph.D., M.A./M.S., M.F.A., J.D./Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D.)
  • Be a member of an eligible student population
    • A First-Generation college student from a Low-Income background, or
    • A member of a historically underrepresented group (self-identify as African-American; Hispanic/Latinx; Native American or Alaska Native; or Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander)
  • Interest in learning more about graduate school and research opportunities
  • 2.75 cumulative GPA
  • First-year or Sophomore status
