Entrance Auditions - Information for Prospective Music Majors

Welcome to the Entrance Auditions - Information page for the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.  We're excited that you are interested in our program and look forward to meeting you soon!

  • First, all prospective music majors must apply and be accepted into the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. See the Admissions page for more information.
  • Second, all prospective music majors must complete an Entrance Audition for the Music Department. The information below pertains to Entrance Auditions at UWRF.

Keep in mind that a Entrance Auditions are different than Ensemble Auditions, which are for students who are already enrolled at UWRF. For information about Ensemble Auditions (which occur at the beginning of each semester), please see the the Ensembles page or contact the associated ensemble director.

With that, it's time to move on to information about Entrance Auditions for the Music Department at UWRF.

Audition Requirements

All prospective music majors are required to perform an Entrance Audition for admittance into the music program at UWRF (see the Audition Application page to register for an entrance audition). As a part of the audition, candidates must perform musical selections and take a music-theory placement exam (2 PM). Please check in at the Music Office (Kleinpell Fine Arts B46) by 1:50 PM.

In addition, students wishing to pursue Music Education will be required to complete an interview  (see below), which typically takes place prior to the 2 PM music-theory placement exam.

Individual schedules will be emailed approximately one week prior to scheduled audition dates.

Performance Repertoire - Instrumentalists and Vocalists

All prospective music majors (instrumentalists and vocalists) are required to perform musical selections for UWRF faculty.  Candidates are encouraged to perform two contrasting selections (e.g., etudes, solos, individual movements) for entrance auditions, including:

  • One slow selection to showcase phrasing, tone, intonation, etc.
  • One fast selection to showcase technical skill, instrumental or vocal ability, etc.

Here are some additional guidelines to consider:

  • Be sure to select music that will highlight your strengths as a musician.
  • If your performance repertoire includes piano, you must perform with an accompanist.  Most prospective students bring their accompanist with them to the audition, which allows them to practice with that person in advance.  If you would prefer to hire a member of the UWRF faculty to accompany you at your audition, please contact us in advance ( to make the necessary arrangements for your audition day.
  • Memorization is not a requirement for auditions at UWRF; you are welcome to use music for all performance components of the audition process.

Scales - Instrumentalists Only

In addition to the selections listed above, instrumentalists will be required to perform scales (chromatic and major).  Please plan to play scales using a tempo and range that showcase your abilities as an instrumentalist.

Music-Theory Placement Exam

All prospective music majors will be required to take a music-theory exam as a part of the audition process.  Exams will take place at 2 PM on all scheduled audition dates and will include both written and aural components.

Music-Education Interview - Music-Education Students Only

All prospective Music Education majors will additionally be asked to share their music-education goals in a brief interview. There is nothing to prepare or submit for the interview - just be ready to talk about your dreams regarding a career in music education.

Please Note: as part of the interview process, we will ask questions about your experiences on piano, so that we can place you in the appropriate section of Class Piano. If you think you might be eligible to test out of Class Piano I, please plan to play for us, including two major scales of your choice and one brief musical selection (e.g., etude, song). If you don't have strong piano chops, don't panic - simply let us know that at your interview. That said, there is no time like the present to get started on piano!

Music-Major Scholarships

There is not a separate process for prospective music majors regarding music scholarships at UWRF.  With that in mind:

  • All prospective music majors who audition by March 24, 2017 will be considered for scholarships; applicants who audition after March 24, 2017 will not be eligible for scholarship consideration.
  • Prospective music majors who are awarded a scholarship will receive notification along with their letter of admittance into the music program (see Entrance Audition - Application).
  • Once students are admitted into UWRF as a music major, they are eligible to apply for additional music scholarships (up to $4000.00 per semester), which make our already-reasonable tuition all the more affordable.  Keep your eyes open for more information each spring semester.

Additional Considerations

We hope you'll make the most of your visit to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. With that in mind, here are some ideas to consider:

  • We would encourage you to come early to sit in on classes and/or rehearsals to get a feel for what our music program is all about.  Please contact our music faculty if you are interested in pursuing this option.
  • Please explore our Events and Calendar page to see if any concerts are happening on your audition day - you are definitely invited to attend!
  • Don't forget to leave time in your day to explore our campus while you are here, including Kleinpell Fine Arts Center, the University Center, Chalmer Davee Library, and more.  You may also want to schedule a campus visit to get a feel for the University as a whole.

We look forward to seeing you on campus in the near future!
