Megan Banick is currently part of the inaugural group of Fulbright Public Policy Fellows, working in the Guatemalan Ministry of Education. Megan's current tasks include consulting on various education topics such as intercultural-bilingual education quality, civic education through student government, and international standardized testing. While leading a project for the Ministry on parent perceptions of the importance of education for their children, she has traveled to rural Guatemala to interview and work with an indigenous village. Previously interning at a local NGO, Megan supported an agriculture and microbusiness training program. Megan reflects on her Spanish studies in the Modern Language Department:

My studies with the UWRF Spanish program gave me the ability to work with a very diverse group of people. I learned a great deal about Hispanic culture. Going on the Modern Language 376 Mexico J-Term Study Tour was one of the most useful experiences of my college career.  The Modern Language Department also made it easy for me to transfer Spanish credits from my study abroad in Santiago, Chile. The combination of my Spanish language studies, study abroad in Mexico, and South America have made me a more dynamic candidate for jobs, and employers have commented on my ability to adapt when working in a multicultural situation. The Spanish department at UWRF allowed me to me to finish my degree and gain these experiences, thus paving the way for my future career. After graduating from the Marketing Communications and Spanish programs at UWRF, I was able to utilize my Spanish skills in a variety of ways.  I have worked both with bilingual education in Spain and immigrant/refugee education in the United States.  Having recently completed an MA in International Development at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, my current interests include educational reform and political economic development in Latin America.
