Instructional Designer

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls, a member of the University of Wisconsin System, is located 30 miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul in scenic west central Wisconsin.  Year around arts, cultural and recreational events are easily accessible.  UW-RF’s 6,500 undergraduate and graduate students pursue degrees in four colleges:  Arts and Sciences; Education and Professional Studies; Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Science; and Business and Economics. The Position:  Instructional Designer - This position will assist and advise faculty members, instructional and non-instructional academic staff members, and students on instructional design, development, and delivery of fully online, hybrid, and tradition face-to-face courses.  This person will work with instructional staff, especially faculty teaching with alternative delivery methods, to help develop successful and effective courses.  

Specific Responsibilities:  

Instructional Design and Development

  • Provide faculty members with development opportunities and consultation focused on the design and development of course materials using appropriate instructional strategies to effectively achieve desired student learning outcomes.
  • Identify development opportunities for faculty in the application of technology in instruction through one-on-one sessions, workshops or other means as deemed appropriate.
  • Actively participate in educational technology communities within UW System and state/national levels.
  • Capture and report data relating to courses taught using online delivery methods, as well as professional development opportunities available to faculty members teaching online

Instructional and Learning Technologies 

  • Conduct needs assessments and provide direct technical assistance to faculty members with a range of computer competencies, using instructional and learning technology tools.  These tools include, but are not limited to;
    • Course/Learning Management System (Desire2Learn)
    • Screen Recording Software (Camtasia Studio, Camtasia Relay Recorder)
    • Media Hosting and Delivery Services (Kaltura Management Console)
    • Collaborative Learning Spaces (Wikispaces)
    • Interactive/Digital Ink Technologies (SMART Technologies)
    • Student Response Systems (iClickers)
      • Plagiarism Detection System (Turn-it-in)
      • Create instructors as requested
      • Delete instructors when terminated as directed by the service provider
      • Verify workings of all integration with other systems
    • Webpage development/web-authoring
  • Provide backup technical support/administration for the University’s course/learning management system (Desire2Learn).
  • Prepare and maintain technical support documentation for faculty members using University supported instructional and learning technologies
  • Explore, pilot and promote innovations in technologies and techniques for all methods of instructional delivery.
  • Research and implement emerging educational technologies, related guides and resolve issues with instructional technology.   

Provide Daily Technical Support for Teaching and Learning Technologies used by campus

  • Consult with users, assist them in making effective use of information and teaching & learning technologies or direct them to other resources required
  • Provide direct support to users resolving issues assigned to TLT within the issue tracking system
  • Provide information to users regarding the status of their requests and resolve any necessary issues regarding the same
  • Coordinate w/ other departments and teams within DoTS to resolve customer issues and requests
  • Prepare and maintain technical support documentation for faculty members using University supported instructional and learning technologies

Classroom/Learning Spaces Technology

  • Consult with faculty members, staff and students to plan and design technical requirements for classrooms and learning spaces on campus.
  • Prepare technical requirements and diagrams for the design and renovation of technology in University classrooms and learning spaces.
  • Provide faculty members with development opportunities, and consultation using classroom technology

Qualifications (Required):

  • Education:  Master’s degree or higher in learning technologies, instructional design, instructional technologies, or related field.
  • Experience in area of expertise:  Two years of professional experience in learning technologies, instructional design, instructional technologies, or related field.
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to diverse student populations and ability to contribute to the University’s commitment to enhancing student awareness and appreciation of diverse ethnic and cultural heritages.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interpret and explain information to a variety of persons and groups
  • Extensive knowledge of instructional technology and the ability to integrate these resources into instructional programs.
  • Familiarity and experience with a variety of classroom technologies (Extron, Crestron, AMX).  
  • Ability to work with numerous software packages and multiple hardware platforms.
  • Experience in website design and development principles using current web standards and recommendations.  
  • Knowledge of appropriate integration of digital media in learning environments recognizing design considerations and technology limitations.
