Costume Shop

University Theatre Costume Shop  

Costume shop employees work at the direction of the shop supervisor.  You must have some sewing skills and experience with sewing machines.  Your supervisor will familiarize you with the production you are working on with respect to the number and style of costumes and accessories required. You may be asked to  

  • Take and record actor's measurements for fittings
  • Cut and sew from patterns and/or drawings
  • Make alterations/repairs to completed wardrobe items
  • Spot clean/launder costumes
  • Build or construct using sewing machines, glue gun or other hand tools
  • Pull multiple items from inventory for coordination of wardrobes
  • Return items to inventory storage
  • Prepare rented items for return to vendor
  • Help maintain shop and storage areas in an orderly fashion
  • Work independently or with other students while supervisor is not present

Complete a variety of support tasks, which may include

  • Needle threading
  • Hand or machine stitching
  • Pattern pinning or cutting; measuring
  • Use simple hand tools for assembly
  • Cleaning and organizing the shop and storage areas
